Unveiling the Worcester memorial

Recruits for both the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy trained in Greenhithe via the various ships "Worcester" moored offshore and the Merchant Navy Training college once situated to the west of the abbey.

We have had some enquiries about tracing those who have been here and are happy to pass those wanting information onto two alumni web-sites (right column)

The Old Worcesters site contains much information about those who served and on planned reunions. In 2004 many Old Worcesters met for a meal on the Abbey Green and to witness the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and mosiac.

The Worcester was briefly joined by the Cutty Sark at her mooring off Ingress Park shore before the Cutty Sark went to be refurbished and located in Greenwich. For more information on the Worcester see our Local History Section.

Merchant Navy recruits were trained at the Merchant Navy College in the Abbey grounds and they have their own website with photos, contacts and details of their regular reunions (see column to right)

Greenhithe has always had a strong maritime link and these two worthy associations celebrate that and the strong friendships resulting from shared experience. We are planning a section on this site looking at the experiences of local people and we would welcome contact from any old boys

OLD WORCESTERS - INFORMAL REUNIONS 2005

3rd Monday in the Month These reunions will continue into 2005, with the exception of December and January. They will take place at lunch time on the third Monday of each month, at the J.D. Weatherspoons pub The Liberty Bounds" (Tel: No: 020 7481 0513), 15 Trinity Square, Tower Hill, London. This pub is to be found almost opposite the church of All Hallows by the Tower. Members interested in attending, especially those travelling from afar, should contact
